The Vigil With a Blanket
Published · Updated
Two small figures share a fallen log at the edge of a frosted pumpkin patch. A pale blue blanket hangs over the boy’s shoulder, its soft folds resting against the rough bark. Beside him, his younger sister leans close in a thick plaid coat and knitted hat. They face the broad field and the distant farmhouse, where one bright window makes a small warm point beneath the dark hills. A thermos and two mugs wait among the vines at their feet.
Moonlight traces the pumpkins’ ridges and the fine white frost covering the tangled stems. The nearest fruit looks large and tactile, while smaller pumpkins scatter toward the fence and disappear into the night. A bare tree spreads across the upper corner, its branches sharply drawn against the stars. The white picket fence leads away from the children and gives the quiet patch a clear boundary. With most of the view given to earth and sky, the little vigil feels sheltered within a much larger landscape. Warm clothing, a shared blanket and a distant light supply its gentle human detail.
