The White Courtyard of Hanging Geraniums
Published · Updated
Red, pink and white geraniums spill from small pots across the walls of this enclosed courtyard. Their uneven stems and changing heights give the white plaster a lively surface, while the dark green containers keep a common rhythm. A broad flight of worn steps rises along the left side to a timber gallery. Sunlight reaches the upper flowers and roof tiles, leaving the lower paving in cool shade. Beneath the gallery, a shallow arch frames another quiet doorway and a cluster of leafy plants.
The photograph brings together several different kinds of texture without losing the simple shape of the space. Rough plaster, aged handrails and weathered stair treads contrast with the glossy leaves and rounded pebbles underfoot. Larger terracotta pots anchor the hanging display at ground level. The empty courtyard allows each practical detail to remain visible, from the wall brackets to the timber roof supports.
