The Yellow Raincoat on the Pier Carousel
Published · Updated
Painted sea-horses circle beneath a striped canopy, their curling tails and raised leaf ornament catching the warm light of the pier. Brass poles and small bulbs frame a view of the sea at sunset. From inside the ride, a girl in a yellow raincoat passes close by, one hand on the seat’s handle and the other raised in a wave. Her red pinafore and white tights add bright, familiar colours among the antique painted wood.
Outside the safety rail, a woman in a beige trench coat watches with a hand at her cheek. Their exchanged glance gives the lively scene a small moment of stillness. Behind her, pumpkins sit near a bench and a candyfloss kiosk while gulls cross the golden sky. A passing mount blurs softly in the foreground, suggesting the carousel’s gentle movement. Worn paint, shell shapes, timber boards and warm bulbs give this autumn seaside wallpaper a rich sense of place, with the two figures naturally connected across the turning ride.
