Two little costumes find a puddle mirror
Published · Updated
The two costumes appear twice beside the wet park path. A girl in a broad red mushroom hat touches one boot to a shallow puddle, sending a small ring through its reflection. Her friend leans forward beside her with an amused smile. Their shared attention turns the puddle mirror into a quiet discovery before the next part of their autumn outing.
Folded cream fabric makes the gills beneath the hat, and pale spots break up its soft red top. The girl’s loose dress, ribbed tights and brown lace boots have ordinary weight and texture. The boy wears a moss green cardigan over a cream shirt, with plum corduroy trousers and a small black bat bow at his collar. A plain canvas bag hangs naturally at his side.
Golden branches rise around them, while a break in the clouds brings warm light across the wet stones. The low view includes both the clear faces and the reflected colors below. Fallen leaves interrupt the water’s surface and soften its edge. The little ripple is the only disturbance in an otherwise still moment.
