Vaulted cistern reflections fill the dark water
Published · Updated
Vaulted cistern reflections extend the stone columns into dark shallow water. Brick arches cross overhead in a repeating grid, their warm brown surfaces interrupted by pale capitals and narrow iron ties. Small amber lights stand close to the column bases. Their reflections form broken vertical lines across the gently moving pool.
The nearest column rises from a broad stepped base beside the wet stone ledge. Mineral stains darken its lower surface, while shallow chips and fine joints make the limestone feel substantial. Under the water, uneven paving remains visible through clearer patches. The chamber has depth beyond the nearest row, with more supports fading into the darker right side.
A cool shaft of daylight enters near the far left and reaches a short flight of steps. Its pale reflection creates a second path through the warm illumination. The diagonal viewpoint leaves room for both the high vaulting and the water below. Heavy structural forms meet soft ripples, giving the empty reservoir a measured rhythm and a sense of still air.
