Volcanic Vapor Ring Clears the Dark Summit

Published · Updated

A volcanic vapor ring hangs above a dark summit against a wide blue sky. Its tilted oval has uneven white edges, with fine wisps beginning to separate from the main shape. The open center remains transparent. Below it, a less orderly plume rises from a notch along the crest and drifts sideways over the mountain.

Patches of snow trace the sheltered gullies and breaks in the charcoal slopes. Some form narrow ribbons, while others gather in small irregular hollows. Low light touches the upper ridges with warm ochre and leaves the lower ground in cool shadow. The contrast makes the broad shape of the cone clear without hiding its rough surface.

Angular lava stones fill the foreground. Their broken faces, small cavities and scattered snow pockets give the distant event a tangible setting. The ring occupies only a small part of the sky, emphasizing its lightness above the heavy terrain. From near rocks to summit and open air, the photograph follows a continuous change in scale and texture.
