The Wig Block That Smiled

Published · Updated

A powdered wig rests on a carved wooden block beside an old barber’s mirror. The painted face has a thin smile and eyes turned toward the man watching it. He sits still in his white tunic, his expression caught between doubt and recognition. Close curls fill the foreground, while the smiling front of the block appears beyond them in the mirror.

Round bulbs light the dark counter and the worn leather chair. Combs, brushes and small glass bottles stand in loose groups beside a tray of tools. Rain catches the street light at the window, and a carved pumpkin glows from a shelf. The block’s grain and simple painted features keep it visibly wooden, even as its attention seems personal. Channel stitching, leather creases and dulled fittings give the room the texture of long use. The photograph uses the mirror to hold the barber and the strange object in one quiet exchange, leaving the closed shop’s ordinary equipment to frame a smile that should never have appeared.
