Wolf Eels Guard the Hidden Egg Cluster

Published · Updated

Two wolf eels guard an egg cluster beneath a rock overhang. The nearer animal fills the left side of the den with a broad gray head, a bright ringed eye and thick folded lips. A darker second head rests farther back. Between the spotted bodies, pale eggs form a rounded mound on the gravel floor.

Rough skin carries fine mottled patterns and shallow wrinkles that remain visible in the cool light. A few small teeth show at the edge of the nearer mouth. Much of the long body disappears into the shelter, while one curved section follows the right side of the eggs. The close arrangement gives the hidden space a clear center.

Above the animals, white anemones open against dark rock and patches of pink growth. Small stones, shell fragments and sandy grains collect around the den entrance. Beyond the overhang, tall kelp blades rise through blue-green water, placing the intimate scene within a larger marine habitat. The layered rock and dim recesses keep the animals connected to their surroundings while allowing their faces and eggs to remain distinct.
