The Wooden Fox at the Station Buffet
Published · Updated
A tall wooden fox watches over the counter of an old railway buffet. Its pointed ears and lifted muzzle catch the afternoon light, while its long tail curls down the side of a dark oak penny cabinet. Broad carving marks and the changing grain make the figure feel solid and handmade. A small stack of coins sits beneath it on the pale counter.
The room is full of quiet autumn details. Orange lantern seedpods stand in a brown pottery jar beside a dark enamel teapot and buttered toast. Sunlight from the blinds draws thin bands across the cream tiles. A ribbed pendant lamp and timber ceiling continue the warm tones upward, giving the fox plenty of space within the tall room.
In a red booth near the window, two travelers sit beside leather suitcases decorated with a few autumn leaves. A train passes outside through a veil of steam. Their small presence brings a sense of waiting and departure, while the curious wooden figure gives the ordinary station scene its gentle Halloween unease.
