Most rain barrels are built around a 55-gallon drum, and a single barrel saves most homeowners around 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months — collected off a roof that was shedding that water into the storm system anyway.

Rainwater harvesting — collecting and storing rain for later use — is a practice EPA actively promotes for reducing runoff and easing the load on stormwater systems, not a niche hobby.

A barrel fills fast in a real storm; the overflow fitting needs to route excess water somewhere useful (a rain garden, a lawn area) and away from the foundation, the same rule as any downspout.

A rain barrel sits under a modified downspout from the existing rain gutter, intercepting water that's already being collected and channeled off the roof — no new plumbing, just a diversion.
