A bat flower spreads its dark bracts
Published · Updated
A bat flower spreads its burgundy bracts above a cluster of hanging buds and small open flowers. The two broad upper shapes have strong radiating veins and pointed tips that curl slightly outward. Slender whiskers emerge around the center and trail down in long separate curves.
A dark upright stem supports the whole structure among glossy green leaves. Soft light from the side reveals subtle purple tones in the almost-black bracts and catches moisture on the broad foliage below. The close view follows the whiskers nearly to their tips while keeping the surrounding growing bed visible. Layered leaves and deep garden shade emphasize the plant's unusual shape without hiding its fine surface detail.
