A dung beetle climbs its rough round ball
Published · Updated
A dung beetle climbs the side of a rough brown ball on a sandy path. Its black wing covers meet in a narrow central seam beneath a broad rounded shield behind the head. Two short clubbed antennae lift toward the light, and the near legs grip separate points on the ball.
Dry grass fibers and pale grains cover the rounded surface, which rests firmly among small stones. The beetle's dark polished shell contrasts with the tangled coarse material beneath its feet. Low afternoon light catches the top edges of the ball and throws a soft shadow across the grit. Yellow grass stems and a distant low ridge place the close wildlife detail within an open landscape.
