A cicada emerges from its brown shell

Published · Updated

A cicada emerges from its brown shell on the side of a tree at sunrise. Its pale green body curves away from the rough bark, with a dark rounded eye and soft folded wings clearly visible. The lower abdomen remains at the opening of the old casing as the fresh upper body extends into the light.

The shell stays attached to the tree by its dry jointed legs, making the connection between the two forms easy to follow. Golden light passes through the delicate new tissue and catches the bark ridges. Blurred green woodland and a distant low sun fill the background, placing this small moment of change within a quiet morning landscape.
