A keeper polishes the lighthouse lens

Published · Updated

A lighthouse lens fills the right side of the photograph as a keeper wipes its circular center with a cream polishing cloth. His raised hand presses the fabric directly against the glass, while his other hand rests on the curved lower rail. He watches the point of contact with a steady, concentrated expression. The task gives the intricate optical structure a clear human scale.

Rows of glass prisms sit above and below the ringed panel, divided by dark metal ribs. Their thickness creates small shifts of aqua, pale gold, and white as daylight passes through. A nearer panel curves across the left edge, partly framing the keeper without hiding his face or the work of his hands.

Beyond the lantern windows, a blue-gray sea carries broken white waves beneath a cloudy sky. Inside, chipped green paint, bolts, and worn dark metal contrast with the polished glass. The keeper's navy coat has visible creases and marks of use. These surfaces keep the scene practical and tactile, with the lens's geometry surrounding a straightforward act of care.
