A king protea opens its pink crown
Published · Updated
A king protea opens its pink crown above the rocky garden ground. Pointed bracts overlap around a dense pale flower head, changing from creamy bases to soft rose tips. Fine hairs catch the light along their edges, and slender florets remain visible across the central dome.
Leathery leaves extend from the thick supporting stem, with a closed bud rising on a separate branch behind the main bloom. Warm morning light reveals the leaf margins and the small grains of ochre gravel below. The angled close view looks into the flower without separating it from the shrub. Rough surrounding stones and deeper green foliage provide a textured setting for the delicate pale center.
