A moss checkerboard brightens the sunken garden

Published · Updated

A moss checkerboard brightens the sunken garden with alternating emerald and yellow-green squares. Low weathered timber strips define the planted cells, each holding a single irregular stepping slab. Scattered red maple leaves interrupt the ordered surface and give the damp ground small changes of color and texture.

Two broad steps descend beside dry-stacked retaining walls, where ferns and trailing plants soften the stone. A plain dark bench stands along the farther edge under the copper canopy. Seen diagonally from above, the garden keeps its clear grid while the uneven slabs, soft planting and fallen leaves retain the natural variation of an outdoor growing space.
