A Paper Nautilus beneath the Floating Garden

Published · Updated

A delicate white spiral appears beneath a loose canopy of floating seaweed. Within it, a small reddish argonaut holds its folded arms close to the opening, with one amber eye visible beside the pale edge. Fine ribs run across the thin case, catching the light that filters through the moving water above. The animal and its shelter form a compact shape among the trailing fronds.

The surrounding seaweed gives this close view depth and scale. Small round air bladders support the floating growth, while longer strands descend into blue water at different distances from the camera. Gaps in the raft reveal the rippled underside of the sea surface. There is no solid ground in the scene, only the small carried shelter and a changing garden suspended around it.

This vertical underwater photograph suits an ocean collection or a feature about the surprising forms of marine life. The pale ribbed case makes a quiet focal point without losing the detail of its living surroundings. The image is free to download and reuse, including commercial use.
