A Scallop Lifts from the Seagrass
Published · Updated
A ridged scallop hangs just above the sandy edge of a seagrass meadow. The small gap beneath its shell and the disturbed grains below suggest a brief burst of movement. Along the narrow opening between its valves, tiny blue eyes catch the light. Finer pale tentacles follow the same edge, turning a familiar shell shape into an unexpectedly intricate living animal.
Other scallops remain close to the seabed, partly hidden among long green blades. Their quieter positions help the nearest shell stand out without separating it from its habitat. Fragments of old shells, patches of algae and the soft fall of light through the water give the whole scene depth. The eye travels from the sharply defined foreground into a gentler, greener distance.
This vertical photograph brings an unusual marine detail to a nature collection, a coastal interior or a story about life in shallow water. Its calm colour and close viewpoint reward a longer look.
