A red fox crosses the broken lake ice

Published · Updated

A red fox steps through a gap in broken lake ice, its head lowered toward the next patch of clear ground. One forepaw is lifted, while the other legs support a careful forward movement. Russet fur, dark lower legs, and a pale muzzle stand out against the blue surroundings. The long tail extends behind the animal and gives the small crossing a balanced shape.

Uneven ice plates rise on either side of the fox, with cracks, cloudy bubbles, and rough edges visible in the nearer pieces. Low light passes through the clearer slabs and catches small points across their surfaces. Darker gaps between them keep the frozen shore from becoming a continuous white field.

Beyond the animal, the lake opens into a pale sheet bordered by snowy pines. A low sun sits near the distant ridge, with mountains and scattered clouds completing the background. The closest ice falls gently out of focus, directing attention toward the fox while retaining the scale of its surroundings. The photograph follows a quiet, practical movement through an intricate winter landscape.
