The Courtyard of Painted Flowers
Published · Updated
Painted flowers climb the whitewashed boards of this small cottage, linking the windows, porch posts and garden gate. The tall stems leave breathing room around the blue frames, while their red, pink and blue blossoms echo the living flowers beside the cobbled path. Each part belongs to the same cheerful decorative scheme.
The house turns around a sheltered courtyard, with a fitted bench beneath the veranda. Plain cushions and a round wooden table make the porch a comfortable sitting place rather than an ornamental backdrop. One open window, a pale curtain and the shaded doorway give the little home a sense of depth.
Plums hang among turning leaves overhead, and autumn asters gather along the near edge of the path. Sunlight breaks across the cobbles and the worn white paint, leaving the porch cool and shaded. Weathered roof tiles keep the bright colors grounded in a modest rural setting.
