A sugar cube castle gains its final tower

Published · Updated

A sugar cube castle is nearly complete on the round kitchen table. The girl reaches forward to place one last piece on a tower, and her older brother watches the point where her fingers meet the cubes. He holds a small patterned saucer of spare pieces, ready to offer another if it is needed.

The little building stands on an oval slate tray. Four short towers rise above low walls and an open courtyard, with a simple gap for the doorway. Loose sugar grains scatter around the base. A bowl of pale icing and a spoon sit to one side, keeping the materials of the afternoon project clearly visible.

Pink gingham overalls and a navy hair clip give the younger child a soft pattern beside her brother’s broad green-and-navy shirt stripes. A scalloped yellow pendant hangs above them. Turquoise cabinets and a narrow band of patterned tile frame the bright windows, where bare branches meet the spring sky. Warm wood grain and steady daylight bring the whole shared task into one welcoming kitchen scene.
