A turkey vulture dries its wide wings

Published · Updated

A turkey vulture stands on a weathered fence with its wide wings open to the morning sun. Long gray flight feathers spread beneath darker upper layers, their thin edges illuminated from behind. The small bare head turns slightly to one side, and the pale curved bill stands out against its red skin. Both feet grip the top rail while the tail drops behind it.

The weathered fence crosses the foreground before receding through the field. Pale lichen covers the rough timber, and the upright post beside the bird catches a narrow line of light. Gold grasses fill the spaces between the rails. Beads of moisture sparkle along some stems, while the shaded lower growth remains a deeper green.

Morning mist settles in the folds of the pasture beyond. Broad oak trees appear as softened silhouettes, with a low wooded ridge behind them. The sun sits just above that ridge and sends warm light through the open wings. The vertical framing leaves generous space for the layers of field and sky, placing the still bird within a calm and expansive dawn landscape.
