A wood duck lifts its wings through golden water

Published · Updated

Wood duck wings spread above golden water as the bird rises partly upright from the pond. Long flight feathers open in clear layers, and small droplets hang beside their tips. The rounded chest remains close to the waterline. Its movement sends a fresh ring of ripples through the calmer reflections around it.

The male’s head carries a dark green and purple sheen, with bright white curves around the cheek and throat. A red eye and patterned bill stand out against the darker plumage. The chest is warm brown with small pale markings, while the underside catches the soft light. Each area remains distinct as the bird turns slightly to the right.

Autumn leaves float across the foreground between patches of blue sky and yellow tree reflections. Tall trunks rise along the far bank, softened by distance. The duck’s reflected head and body break into narrow bands below the ripples. Warm foliage, cool water and the brief spread of feathers give the pond a lively focus without losing its quiet woodland setting.
