An alligator parts the floating green carpet
Published · Updated
An alligator rests almost level with the duckweed, its raised eyes and broad closed snout breaking the green surface. Tiny floating leaves cling to the dark scales around its face. A narrow opening in the vegetation exposes tea-colored water beneath the nose, where a subdued reflection repeats the rounded shape.
The low viewpoint brings the textures together. Fine ridges cross the damp skin, while individual duckweed leaves form a loose carpet around the animal. A row of darker dorsal scutes leads away toward the upper left. Most of the body remains concealed beneath the water and plants, so the eyes become the clearest points of attention within the scene.
Tall marsh reeds rise behind the alligator, their vertical lines softening into the distant wetland. Warm light passes through a pale cloudy sky and touches the upper leaf surfaces without creating harsh glare. The open foreground water remains darker, holding a few scattered leaves and faint reflected stems. This change from detailed skin to floating greenery and blurred reeds gives the photograph depth while preserving the quiet, close feeling of the water-level view.
