Backgammon in the Misty Boathouse
Published · Updated
A small table glows beneath the high rafters of a wooden boathouse. Two players sit across a backgammon board, surrounded by the long forms of covered boats. The man holds a cup near the table while his opponent, wearing an ivory beaded dress, waits quietly. Their game occupies only a small part of the tall interior.
Timber braces cross above them in a dense pattern of triangles. Narrow gaps between the wall boards admit cool slivers of light, and the open doorway reveals a dark lake and a short wooden jetty. An amber paper lantern hangs beside the opening. Oars, ladders and ropes rest along the walls, giving the room the practical character of a place used for boats.
Low mist drifts across the floor around the chairs and under the boat racks. Its cool grey edge meets the warm pool cast by the little hanging lamp. Canvas covers, rough planks and the delicate dress beadwork hold separate textures within the subdued light. The setting feels suspended between an ordinary late game and the stillness of the lake outside.
