The Caller at the Actress’s Door
Published · Updated
An elderly actress sits straight in a worn wooden chair, holding her faded stole with both hands. Across the narrow dressing room, a young visitor kneels and offers an open palm. Neither turns towards us. Their attention rests on the small space between them, where the invitation has been made but not yet answered. Behind his pale linen suit, the open door is filled with white light, leaving whatever lies beyond it unseen.
The dressing room carries the quiet weight of many performances. Unlit bulbs surround the old mirror, gowns hang along a crowded rail, and bottles gather beside a small pumpkin and a dried bouquet. A shaded lamp brings a little amber warmth to the cool dawn. Velvet folds, grey hair, worn chair arms and the faded carpet keep the scene grounded in familiar materials. The brightness at the doorway changes their ordinary meeting into a gentle Halloween mystery, with no raised voices or hurried movement to explain what might happen next.
