The Fox Music Box and Watching Pumpkins
Published · Updated
A small carved fox stands inside an open wooden music box, its faceted shape raised on a round turning base. The box is painted with branches, flowers and woodland motifs. Beside it, a girl in a red pinafore reaches toward the side crank while sitting on a pale sheepskin. Her attention remains with the fox and the gentle movement of her hand.
Four adults sit on pine benches behind her, their hands still in their laps and their smiles quiet. Knit cardigans, wool jackets and simple dresses fit the warm timber room. The tiled stove gives a low orange glow, and a shaded lamp lights the nearest faces. A plate of plum cake waits on a small table beside the stove.
Outside the broad window, a row of carved pumpkins sits along the fence. Every lit face looks inward toward the chalet, beneath dark trees and distant mountain peaks. The cold grey view contrasts with the sheltered pine interior. The repeated watching faces outside give the familiar music-box moment a small, persistent sense of unease.
