The Table with the Carved Face

Published · Updated

A calm carved face supports the thick tabletop, its closed eyes and rounded cheeks following the grain of an old timber block. Dark growth rings sweep across the surface, interrupted by natural cracks and small knots. The top keeps an irregular edge rather than becoming a perfect circle, and the broad pedestal gives the table a solid stance. A shallow earthenware bowl rests above the face, leaving most of the worn wood visible.

Late sunlight crosses the carving from the nearby window, drawing warm highlights over the brow and deep shadows beneath the slab. The face remains unmistakably a crafted object, with tool marks and the weight of the material shaping its expression. A plain linen armchair sits behind it, surrounded by limewashed walls and a dark stone floor. Golden garden leaves beyond the glass add a soft autumn color.
