Chimney Swifts Circle above the Violet Rooftops
Published · Updated
Chimney swifts cross a violet sky in a broad stream that narrows toward a brick roost chimney. Dark silhouettes spread widely across the upper view, then gather more closely above the open mouth. Their different wing positions and changing sizes suggest the depth and movement of the flock.
Below the birds, slate rooftops step through a leafy neighborhood. The tall chimney rises from the nearest roof with its red masonry clearly outlined against the dusk. Smaller chimneys and a warmly lit dormer window bring the scale back to ordinary houses. The birds make this familiar architecture part of a larger evening spectacle.
Trees fill the gaps between the buildings, while a river and distant skyline catch the last pink light. The color moves gradually from warm near the horizon to lavender overhead. Much of the photograph remains open sky, giving the circling flock room to unfold. This is a view of wildlife sharing the city, with a brief natural gathering above the settled shapes of roofs and windows.
