Ocotillo flowers fan across the desert dusk
Published · Updated
Ocotillo flowers bring small red flames of color to the ends of long thorny canes. The plant fans upward from a dense base among rough rocks, with each stem following a slightly different angle. Tiny green leaves appear along sections of the dark branches. The red flower clusters remain distinct against the lighter bands of sky behind them.
The rocky ground slopes away on both sides of the plant. Low shrubs and scattered prickly forms occupy the spaces between stones, while larger boulders anchor the foreground. Their broken surfaces hold patches of subdued evening light and deeper violet shadows. The nearest canes retain enough bark detail to connect the airy upper branches to their solid base.
Desert dusk spreads across the distant valley in layers of blue and muted brown. Above the ridges, apricot light runs beneath broken violet clouds. This warm band echoes the red flowers without overwhelming them. The tall portrait frame follows the full reach of the shrub from stone to sky, showing a spare desert plant as an elaborate structure within a broad and quiet landscape.
