A Cobbler Fits a New Leather Sole
Published · Updated
A cobbler fits a new leather sole to a worn black ankle boot, comparing the smooth replacement with the older surface below. The boot rests upside down on a heavy iron last. One hand steadies its upper while the other guides the pale leather piece into position, leaving the outline and thickness of both clearly visible.
Her blue apron carries the marks of repeated work, and a warm lamp lights the fingers, stitching and polished wear on the boot. A small hammer, waxed thread and offcuts lie across the bench. Rows of wooden shoe forms fill the shelves behind her. The photograph gives a familiar repair task the careful attention usually reserved for a finished object.
