Raised Bands on a Leather Book
Published · Updated
A leather book rests in a wooden press while its raised bands receive careful shaping. One hand supports the upper edge, and the other holds short brass nippers against a band on the spine. Warm light reveals the small creases in the brown leather, the rounded ridges and the pale layers of paper above them.
The close viewpoint keeps the tool, fingers and book at a tangible scale. A broad wooden screw and worn press jaws show how the volume is supported, while a smooth pale bone folder lies on the bench below. The unlettered cover keeps the leather grain and rounded ridges prominent. The photograph captures a small finishing step that gives a bound book its distinctive structure.
