The Hound on the Minute Hand
Published · Updated
The clock keeper leans toward the great glass dial, one hand raised as a winged hound looks back at him from outside. The grey animal crouches along the iron minute hand with its paws set firmly on the metal. Its narrow face and wet coat seem familiar, but the broad wings rising above its shoulders belong to the storm.
Rain streams down the dial between the two figures. A flash of lightning outlines the hound and turns the glass pale, leaving the keeper's shoulder in warm shadow. Dark rectangular markers curve around the clock face, while the central spindle anchors the heavy hands beneath the creature's weight. Beyond the dial there are only clouds, rain and brief white light.
Inside the tower, worn gears and timber braces crowd the foreground. A lantern warms a small workbench holding oil cans, a stained mug, cloth and a pumpkin. The keeper's leather apron and rolled sleeves belong to a practical evening of maintenance, interrupted by something no mechanism in the room can explain.
