Every Cuckoo Calls in the Clockmaker Hall

Published · Updated

Dozens of carved cuckoo clocks cover one wall of a narrow entrance hall. Their little doors stand open, and pale yellow birds project from the dark wooden houses. Carved leaves, stags and small rooflines vary the outlines of the clocks, while long chains and pinecone-shaped weights hang below. The repeated birds turn the ordinary wall into an unexpected chorus of tiny moving parts.

On the staircase opposite, a girl in a white nightdress and knitted cardigan holds the banister and looks across in surprise. Her small figure leaves the collection as the main event. A warm hanging lamp lights the carved surfaces and polished stair rail, while cool moonlight enters through the fanlight above the front door.

The lower hall remains full of familiar details: coats on hooks, an umbrella stand, a narrow rug and dark wooden floorboards. These quieter objects make the crowded clock wall feel even more extraordinary. Brass chains, pale birds and deep carved shadows remain distinct against the light plaster, giving the scene a rich sense of texture and scale.
