The Carousel Horse with the Wild Grin
Published · Updated
The swept mane and tall ear of a carousel horse fill the foreground. Red, cream and worn gold follow the carved curls, while a turned muzzle exposes a row of teeth. The eye seems directed toward the woman standing beyond the bench. Chips and fine marks continue across the horse’s features, making the strange expression belong to a painted wooden object rather than a living animal.
The woman has stepped back with her brush lowered and her other hand relaxed. Her still reaction is framed by a mirror ringed with bulbs, workbenches and other carousel mounts waiting on stands. Gold-leaf sheets, plain pots and unused tools lie among the scattered shavings. A carved pumpkin glows on a crate near the edge of the room. The reverse viewpoint lets the horse dominate the photograph while preserving the depth of the workshop. Tactile wood, striped fabric and hard pools of light carry the scene’s quiet Halloween tension without a dramatic action or theatrical pose.
