Frost in the Night Ferry Galley
Published · Updated
Cold blue portholes interrupt the warmth of this narrow ferry galley. Beyond their heavy brass rims, snow fills the night above a dark, unsettled sea. Inside, cream painted panels, rivets and overhead lights follow the low ceiling toward a rounded doorway. The long counter and its handrail draw the eye through the room, past a coffee urn, hanging cups and a small bowl of orange gourds.
A steward lifts his cap midway along the counter, revealing hair scattered with white frost. The small, unusual detail gives the comfortable room an unexpected chill. Across from him, a passenger in a camel coat and burgundy scarf sits with her back to the doorway, a cup resting close at hand. Their quiet presence leaves plenty of room for the surrounding fittings and the contrast between warm light and winter weather.
At the far end, an amber jukebox adds a rounded glow against the bulkhead. Worn floor tiles, dark timber panels and navy upholstery balance the brighter metal surfaces. The result is a sheltered night interior with a curious seasonal detail waiting to be noticed.
