Five in the Bottle Kiln
Published · Updated
Golden leaves descend through a deep brick chamber toward five figures on the kiln floor. A harlequin reaches upward from the shoulders of a lion-costumed companion, while a potter, a moon and a sorceress watch beside them. Their small gathering is surrounded by stacks of round clay saggars, many chipped at the rim or filled with fragments. The curved walls make the chamber feel much taller than the people inside it.
Seen directly from above, the soot-dark brickwork becomes a great oval frame around the scene. Daylight catches individual bricks, the nearest falling leaves and the faces turned toward the opening. Grey cloth, a plum robe and muted diamond patches bring small notes of colour into the earthy space. A narrow doorway opens onto more fallen leaves, and several ceramic pumpkins sit together on a pottery stack. The photograph holds a playful autumn moment inside a setting shaped by heat, clay and years of use, with rough surfaces visible all the way from the rim to the floor.
