A paper castle fills the Halloween loading yard

Published · Updated

A Halloween paper castle towers above the wet paving of an old loading yard. Its pale walls rise in several unequal towers, each finished with square battlements. Narrow windows glow amber from within, and a broad pointed doorway opens through the center. The castle has an ambitious scale, yet its sheet edges and folded surfaces keep the construction easy to understand.

Large cloth bats hang between the towers on visible lines. Their ribbed wings and softly creased bodies add a second kind of texture against the flat ivory panels. Heavy folded buttresses widen toward the ground, where small fixtures anchor the walls. The loading yard remains visible around the installation, including dark brickwork, tall windows and a steel structure crossing the open sky.

Twilight turns the sky a cool blue while the small lamps cast warm reflections across the rain-dark bricks. The empty doorway gives the scene a welcoming sense of possibility without adding visitors. Smooth panels, rough masonry and sagging cloth respond differently to the light. The combination makes the castle feel like a substantial temporary place assembled within the ordinary architecture of the yard.
