His Double on the Gallery Bench
Published · Updated
A night guard has stopped in the long gallery aisle after noticing a stranger on a leather bench. The visitor looks up at a large autumn landscape, absorbed in the painted trees and water. He wears a charcoal coat and dark trousers, while the guard remains in a plain navy uniform farther across the room. A passing resemblance connects their faces, but their separate attention and the distance between them leave the moment unresolved.
Rain gathers across the broad skylights overhead, filling the room with cool diffuse light. Small lamps add warmth to the gilt frames, which hold forests, fields and pale skies along the walls. The bench shows rubbed leather and deep buttoned creases, and the polished parquet carries restrained reflections beneath both men. In the distance, pumpkins sit beside a velvet barrier. The architecture remains spacious and still around the encounter. Repeating frames, ceiling bays and floor patterns draw the eye through the room before returning it to the unfamiliar visitor beneath the largest painting.
