The Double in the Laundromat

Published · Updated

At the entrance to a small laundromat, a man with a canvas laundry bag has stopped on the dark doormat. He looks across the room toward a stranger seated beside the dryers. The seated man is concentrating on a striped scarf, unaware of the glance. A similar scarf hangs around the newcomer's neck. Their resemblance remains a quiet detail within the room, while different clothes, separate positions and independent expressions keep the encounter uneasy rather than familiar.

Cream machine panels and circular steel rims run along the right wall. Fluorescent lights reveal the worn tile floor, the bench and the loosely folded laundry in nearby baskets. One lower drum casts a small warm glow beside the seated figure. Beyond the entrance, rain softens the street lights into scattered reflections. Paper bats decorate the glass and a leafy plant stands above the folding table. The long clear aisle connects the two sides of the picture, allowing the ordinary details of a late-night wash to frame an unexpected moment of recognition.
