Jacana Chicks Shelter beneath Rusty Wings

Published · Updated

Jacana chicks shelter close to an adult on a broad mat of floating leaves. One striped chick nestles beneath the chestnut wing, while the other stands beside the long gray feet. Their different positions make this marsh bird family easy to follow against the open water. The adult keeps its head raised above both chicks, with a pale blue shield catching the morning light.

Fine feather edges overlap along the lowered wing. A narrow white neck, dark crown and warm yellow breast separate the adult's colors without hiding the smaller bird underneath. Long toes spread across the wet leaf surface. Beside them, the second chick has a much shorter bill and soft down marked with dark brown stripes.

Reeds rise along the right edge and continue into the distance. Small patches of vegetation break the water into irregular pools, while a blurred reflection carries the birds' warm colors down through the foreground. The low viewpoint gives the quiet sheltering moment room within its habitat. Far trees and a pale sky keep the marsh open beyond the close group.
