Kelvin Helmholtz Clouds Curl above the Headland

Published · Updated

Kelvin Helmholtz clouds curl above a coastal headland in a long band of soft gray crests. Each rises from the same lower layer before folding over into a shape that resembles a breaking wave. Peach twilight shines behind the upper edges, separating the unusual cloud forms from the cooler sky around them.

The crests vary in height and width, with loose wisps trailing from their tips. Finer cloud streaks cross the space above, while a flatter darker layer rests nearer the distant horizon. The repeated curls provide the scene's strongest rhythm without filling the entire sky.

Below them, a quiet bay bends around rocky slopes covered with short grass. Small pale beaches lie between dark shelves at the water's edge, and distant headlands fade into blue-gray layers. Close stones and wind-bent grasses occupy the foreground, giving the wide weather view a tangible place to begin. The restrained coast remains calm beneath the dramatic formation, with no buildings or people interrupting the relationship between land, water and changing evening light.
