Lawnmower Racing around the Hay Bale Bend
Published · Updated
Lawnmower racing sends two compact machines around a red-earth bend. The helmeted riders sit low behind their steering wheels, following different lines between the hay bales. Dust hangs behind the tires, catching the late light and stretching the sense of movement across the track. The small scale of the vehicles contrasts with the space given to the race.
Turquoise and orange bodywork make the separate machines easy to follow. The low viewpoint keeps their wheels, seated drivers and the curving surface in a coherent relationship. Straw, earth and the tree line establish a country-event setting rather than a conventional racing circuit. The photograph finds its spectacle in familiar equipment taking on an unfamiliar role, with the bend concentrating the action into one compact moment.
