Meteor Impact Crater Beneath the Open Sky

Published · Updated

A meteor impact crater opens across a broad desert landscape. Layered rock walls descend toward a dry floor, with long bands of shadow making the bowl's depth easy to read. The opposite rim stretches almost across the photograph, separating the enclosed hollow from the distant open plains and flat-topped landforms.

Pale boulders fill the near edge of the view. Their broken surfaces carry sharp ridges, small holes and patches of darker weathering. Sparse dry plants grow between the stones, adding a little olive and gold to the sand-colored ground. These close textures establish a useful scale before the eye travels down into the much larger depression.

Above the crater, white cumulus clouds spread across a clear blue sky. Angled sunlight reaches the upper walls and foreground rocks while leaving some slopes in softer shade. The tall composition gives room to both the broad geological form and the weather overhead. No people or structures interrupt the setting, allowing the photograph to hold attention on the crater's shape, the rough rim and the surrounding desert.
