Paper birds cross the giant lantern
Published · Updated
Paper birds meet inside a glowing garden lantern as two girls invent a small performance together. Each holds a separate bird puppet on a slender stick. They smile toward one another, watching the shapes approach while enlarged silhouettes appear on the cream screen behind them. Their floral and gingham dresses bring familiar everyday texture into the unusual theater.
The tall lantern is built from curved bamboo ribs tied across translucent panels. Its open front reveals the timber supports and the entire standing space. Warm light spreads across the paper, showing subtle wrinkles and differences in tone. The pointed rounded shape rises well above the children, turning a simple shadow theater into a striking garden structure.
Outside the opening, smaller round lanterns sit beside plants and the gravel path. Deep blue evening sky separates the glowing form from the dark tree leaves. Both children stand comfortably on the ground, with their attention held by the same little story. The picture combines the scale of the lantern with the precise, modest gesture of two handmade puppets.
