A Grove of Giant Paper Feathers

Published · Updated

Giant ivory feathers stand in a quiet stone gallery beneath a long skylight. Each slender stem rises into a pointed crown of finely divided paper, with a continuous central quill holding the branching shape together. The nearest feather reaches almost to the vaulted ceiling. Smaller forms recede through the room, leaving narrow views between their pale silhouettes.

The paper edges curl and separate into delicate strands. Daylight passes through these openings, making some parts appear almost transparent while the thicker quills remain solid. Small circular bases anchor the stems to the floor. Their restrained design keeps attention on the tall, fragile-looking forms without hiding how they stand.

The gallery's limestone walls and high roof give the installation an architectural scale. Warm reflected light mingles with the cooler light from above, bringing gentle variations of cream and gold into the paper. A web of soft shadows spreads across the polished floor. With no visitors in the room, the photograph holds the stillness of a grove while making the unusual material of every feather apparent.
