Poppy superbloom flows across the folded hills
Published · Updated
The poppy superbloom spreads orange flower bands across folded green hills, beginning with individual open cups close to the camera. Thin petals catch the light along their curled rims, and closed pointed buds rise between them on slender stems. Fine leaves, scattered yellow flowers and rough stones interrupt the orange, keeping the foreground varied rather than uniform. The nearest slope falls toward a shaded gully before rising again into another broad patch of bloom. That change in height gives the color a clear relationship to the land.
Farther away, the flowers become long irregular ribbons following the contours of the hills. Gray-green scrub and exposed rock remain visible between them, with darker valleys separating each successive ridge. A line of blue mountains closes the distance beneath large white clouds. The open sky gives the dense lower half room to breathe, while soft cloud shadows change the brightness of neighboring slopes. No people or buildings occupy the view. The photograph brings together the light structure of a single flower and the much larger seasonal event that allows similar color to travel across an entire landscape.
