Prairie Dog Greeting beside the Burrow

Published · Updated

A prairie dog greeting takes place on a low burrow mound in the middle of a wide shortgrass prairie. The two near animals bring their noses together, one rising on its hindquarters while the other leans forward from the earth. Their sandy coats catch the warm light, with small rounded ears and dark eyes clearly visible.

Pebbles and loose grains cover the mound beneath their paws. Short black-tipped tails curve behind the pair, and pink flowers grow at one side of the dusty opening. The close textures give the animals a tangible setting without separating them from the broader colony.

Two more prairie dogs stand farther away on separate patches of bare ground. Similar mounds repeat across the grass toward low rolling hills, creating a loose pattern of inhabited places. Above them, tall white clouds gather against a clear blue sky. The vertical composition keeps the intimate nose-to-nose contact low in the scene while allowing the land and weather to stretch far beyond it. Sunlight links the small encounter with the open summer landscape.
