A puffin carries grass to a cliff burrow
Published · Updated
A puffin carries a loose bunch of grass toward a burrow in the turf above the sea. The dry stems spread beyond the sides of its broad bill, giving the small journey a clear purpose. One foot reaches across the uneven rock while the other supports the bird's compact body. Its orange feet and striped bill stand out against black feathers, a pale face and the muted cliff grass.
The burrow sits in the grassy bank to the right. Rough stone, small plants and patches of lichen fill the near ground, with enough variation to show how uneven this narrow ledge is. The bird occupies this close, detailed space while the coast falls away behind it.
Far below, bands of rough blue water lead toward a hazy distance beneath layered clouds. The light remains soft across feathers and turf, without flattening their different textures. That broad coastal setting gives scale to the modest bundle of grass: a small load carried across a very exposed place.
