A gannet colony crowds the edge of the cliff
Published · Updated
A gannet colony rests along the rugged cliff above the evening surf. The nearest birds sit in separate low nests made from dry grass, with pale gold heads, long gray bills and clear blue eyes. White feathers cover their bodies, and black wing tips lie folded along their sides.
One bird holds a thin wisp of nesting material while others face different directions across the headland. Smaller white forms continue toward the distant cliff edge, giving the colony depth without obscuring the land beneath. Below, white foam circles a dark rock stack and washes the coastal walls. Warm sunset light reaches the birds from the horizon while the open sea stays cool blue.
